The newsgroup alt.games.descent
discusses both the Descent and FreeSpace series. If you want to
find the real FRED gurus, though, join the FreeSpace Developer List (FDL). The folks on this mailing list will provide you with quick answers and all kinds of new ideas. There's also a FreeSpace Universe Discussion List (FUDL) covering physics, history, ships, and so on.
There are many great fan sites out there. The Descent Chronicles,
covering both the Descent and FreeSpace series, features an
extensive mission
archive (with reviews) and a webring of other
FreeSpace 2 sites. The FreeSpace SwapMeet is
chock full of useful advice, and it can connect you with other
designers willing to swap voice acting (for .wav
files).
